The art classroom offers a unique opportunity for self discovery and expression. Students have the freedom to direct their process and use critical thinking skills to problem solve. I encourage experimentation, allowing individuals to make decisions and to manifest their artistic vision. I provide students with sufficient media skills so that they can direct their own art making. The obstacles with materials that students encounter and overcome translate to other life skills. Qualities like patience and persistence are commonly experienced in the classroom and can prepare students for challenges they may experience throughout their school day. The two Maine Learning Results that I incorporate most in my curriculum are Media Skills and Making Meaning. My students discover new ways of using media which lead to creating in innovative ways. In my teaching, I encourage students to ask questions to develop their own enthusiasm in cross disciplinary concepts. My students are excited by the units because the relevance to each concept is strategically designed for them to make connections.
