Being an artist is not a hobby, interest, or even just a career. Rather, it's a lifestyle. I am a passionate believer that the visual arts have the ability to transform a student's school and life experience. The art room is a unique place for students to experiment with materials, make mistakes, and most importantly; reflect and grow.
The visual arts allow students choice and decision making, a limited opportunity for most students, especially at the elementary level. This exposure to creativity in the classroom may allow student interest to transform and hopefully, bloom. Student learning becomes inquiry based- in and out of the classroom. They feel inspired to learn independently because they are genuinely intereseted in a topic or concept. The visual arts are capable of igniting this interest through introduction to media skills and meaning making. Being an artist is not simply mastering a skill, moreover, a lifestyle. One that is intrigued by the many facets of the world. Making art allows discovery and understanding of the many complexities of life.
