Community School Project |
The ocean conservation mosaic has been completed! All the materials used in this (second) school wide project, were donated or recycled. Students learned about the organization 4Ocean, who employs people from Bali to clean up the oceans, one pound at a time. We discussed the significance of upcycling materials, and how crucial it is that we recycle what we don't use in our projects. Students were so excited by this mosaic- and we can't wait to see it displayed in our school for everyone to see!
This school-wide community project was inspired by a book, "Only One You" by Linda Kranz. Students discussed themes such as individuality, acceptance, uniqueness, independence. There were many group discussions about the importance of, "finding your own way and straying from the crowd".
Students from grades K-5 created their own individual mixed-media fish. They used materials such as tissue paper and Crayola gel markers to draw patterns on top. The school of fish is displayed in the library at Ocean Ave Elementary School in Portland, Maine. |
